About

The field machine learning concerns techniques for programming a computer to learn from data. A traditional program can be seen as implementing a number of concrete rules which specifies how input is transformed to output; in constrast a machine learning program implements a number of rules specifying how the program should make its own rules for transforming input to output from examples. In situations where the transformation rules are complex (or unknown) the machine learning approach can be very succesfull.

After the course the student should know about and be able to explain:

  • Classification and regression problems
  • Artificial neural networks
  • Hidden Markov models, EM algorithms and Baum-Welch.

Schedule

Lectures take place:

  • Monday 11.15-13.00, Shannon-157.
  • Thursday 09.15-10.00, Shannon-157.

First lecture is on Thursday, April 2 in Shannon-157.

Literature

We will use the following book, which will be available in the GAD bookstore:

Christopher M. Bishop
Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning
Springer, 2006
ISBN: 0387310738

Additional research papers will be handed out in class or made available for download.

Exam and Projects

To participate in the final oral exam each student must complete all mandatory projects.

The final exam is an individual oral exam (20 min) which includes a discussion related to one of the mandatory projects and a general discussion of related topics (maybe in opposite order). You should prepare a 10-12 minutes presentation for each exam question. See the list of (preliminary) exam questions for details. The exam curriculum is every reference listed under "Reading material" on the weekly schedule for Week 1-7, and the descriptions of the mandatory projects.

The exam dates are June 17 - 18, 2009. The exam will take place in Shannon-157 according the exam list. If your name is not on the list, and you expected it to be, then let us know.
